The Home Folder

When you set up a user, Mac OS X creates a Home folder for the user in the Users folder (Figure 9), with the user's short name as the folder name. The icon for the folder appears as a house for the user who is currently logged in and as a regular folder for all other users. Each user's Home folder contains folders for the applications, documents, and settings files for his account (Figure 20):

  • Desktop contains all items (other than mounted disks) on the user's desktop.

  • Documents is the default file location for document files.

  • Movies, Music, and Pictures are for storing video, audio, and image files.

  • Sites is for the user's Web site, which can be put online with the Personal Web Sharing feature.

  • Library is for storing various preferences files, as well as fonts.

  • Public is for storing shared files.

  • Applications, when present, is for storing applications installed by the user for his private use.
