Chapter 7. Applescript & Mac OS X 10.1 > Using a Scripting Addition or Terminal...

Using a Scripting Addition or Terminal to Access Unix Commands

Several free and shareware Scripting Additions for Mac OS X give your scripts access to the Unix command line. In this section, you will explore one the System scripting addition (system.osax) and look at some basic uses of the special system command that the Scripting Addition provides. This command provides interactive access to Unix command-line commands, with Unix-command-generated output returned to the script.

Script 7 uses the Unix uptime command to display interesting status information about the local machine. Script 8 uses the Unix nslookup command to provide domain name service information for machine host names, such as www.apple.com.
