Starting a New Document

When Word starts, Document1 is open and ready for you to type text. Until you save them under new names, new documents are numbered sequentially (Document2, Document3, and so on).

To start a new document:

  • On the Standard toolbar, click the New Blank Document button (Figure 4.1).

    Press Ctrl+N.

To start a new document from the task pane:

1.
From the File menu, choose New (Figure 4.2).

In the Task Pane, click the type of document, such as Blank Document, that you want to start (Figure 4.3).

or

In the Task Pane, click General Templates or Templates On My Web Sites to start a document from a template.

Tip

  • If you select Blank Web Page in the Task Pane, Word will automatically save your document as an HTML page.
