The Info Window

You can learn more about an item by opening its Info window (Figures 36 through 39). Depending on the type of icon (disk, folder, application, document, alias, etc.), the General Information in the Info window will provide some or all of the following information:

  • Icon that appears in the Finder.

  • Name of the item.

  • Kind or type of item.

  • Where item is on disk.

  • Size of item or contents (folders and files only).

  • Created date and time.

  • Modified date and time.

  • Format of item (disks only).

  • Version number or copyright date (files only).

  • Original location on disk (aliases only).

  • Stationery Pad check box to convert the file into a stationery format file (documents only).

  • Locked check box to prevent the file from being deleted or overwritten (folders and files only).

  • Comments entered by users (like you).

Tip

Other types of information available for a disk, folder, or file—including Application, Application Files, Preview, and Privileges—are of an advanced nature and are not discussed in this book. To open the Info window

1.
Select the item for which you want to open the Info window (Figure 40).

2.
Choose File > Show Info (Figure 41), or press .

The Info window for that item appears (Figure 37).

Tip

When the Info window is open, clicking a different icon displays the information for that icon.


To change an item's name

1.
In the Info window, drag the mouse pointer over the item's name to select it.

2.
Type in the new name. What you type replaces the selected text.

Tip

You can change the name of an item only if its name appears within a box (Figures 36 through 39). If there is no box around the item's name, you cannot rename it.


To enter comments in the Info window

1.
Open the Info window for the item for which you want to enter comments.

2.
Click in the Comments box to position the blinking insertion point there.

3.
Type your comments (Figure 42).

To lock an application or document

1.
Open the Info window for the item you want to lock (Figures 37 through 39 and 42).

2.
Turn on the Locked check box.

Tip

Locked items cannot be deleted or overwritten. They can, however, be moved.


To select a new original item for an alias

1.
In the Info window for the alias (Figure 43), click the Select New Original button.

2.
Use the Fix Alias dialog that appears (Figure 44) to locate and select the item that you want to use as the original for the alias.

3.
Click Choose. The item you selected is assigned to the alias.

Tip

The Fix Alias dialog is similar to an Open dialog, which is covered in Chapter 5.


To close the Info window

Click the Info window's close button.

1.
Activate the Info window.

2.
Choose File > Close Window, or press .

Tip

Closing the Info window saves all changes you made to its contents.
