Favorites

Favorites enables you to add frequently used documents, applications, and other items to the Favorites submenu on the Go menu (Figure 29). This makes these items quick and easy to access.

Tip

Favorites also appear in the Open and Save Location dialogs. The Open and Save Location dialogs are covered in Chapter 5.


Tip

The favorites feature works with aliases, which is discussed on the previous two pages.


Tip

Your favorite item aliases are stored in the Favorites folder in the Library folder inside your home folder. You can learn more about your home folder in Chapter 3.


Tip

The Mac OS X installer creates favorites for two items (Figure 29):

  • Documents is an alias to your Documents folder, which is the default location for storing documents.

  • Home is an alias to your home folder.


To add a favorite item

1.
In the Finder, select the icon for the item that you want to add as a favorite item (Figure 30).

Choose File > Add To Favorites (Figure 31), or press .

The item is added to the Favorites submenu on the Go menu (Figure 32).

Tip

You can also add a currently selected folder to favorites by clicking the Add to Favorites button in the Open or expanded Save Location (Figure 33) dialogs. These dialogs are covered in Chapter 5.

To use a favorite item

From the Favorites submenu on the Go menu (Figures 29 and 32), choose the item you want to open.

To remove a favorite

1.
Click the Favorites button in the toolbar of any Finder window.

or

Choose Go > Favorites > Go To Favorites (Figures 29 and 32).

The Favorites folder window opens (Figure 34).

2.
Drag the item that you want to remove out of the window.

3.
Close the Favorites folder window.

The item is removed from the Favorites submenu.
