Customizing the Toolbar

The toolbar, which is discussed in Chapter 2, can be customized to include buttons and icons for a variety of commands and items.

Tip

When you customize the toolbar, your changes affect the toolbar in all windows in which the toolbar is displayed.


To customize the toolbar

1.
With any Finder window open, choose View > Customize Toolbar (Figure 5). Toolbar customization options appear in the current window (Figure 6).

To add an item to the toolbar, drag it from the center part of the window to the position you want it to occupy in the toolbar (Figure 7). When you release the mouse button, the item appears (Figure 8).

To remove an item from the toolbar, drag it from the toolbar into the center part of the window (Figure 9). When you release the mouse button, the item disappears (Figure 10).

To rearrange the order of items on the toolbar, drag them into the desired position (Figure 11). When you release the mouse button, the items are rearranged (Figure 12).

To specify how items should appear on the toolbar, choose an options from the Show pop-up menu at the bottom of the window (Figure 13).

When you are finished making changes, click Done to hide the toolbar customization options and return to your view of the window.

To restore the toolbar to its default settings

1.
With any Finder window open, choose View > Customize Toolbar (Figure 5). Toolbar customization options appear in the window (Figure 6).

2.
Drag the group of items in a box near the bottom of the window to the toolbar (Figure 14). When you release the mouse button, the toolbar's default items appear (Figure 6).

3.
Click Done to hide the toolbar customization options and return to your view of the window.
