Finder Preferences

The Finder Preferences window enables you to customize several aspects of the desktop and Finder windows.

Tip

More Mac OS X customization features are covered in Chapter 11.

To set Finder Preferences

1.
Choose Finder > Preferences (Figure 1) to display the Finder Preferences window (Figure 2).

Figure 1. Choose Preferences from the Finder menu.

Figure 2. The Finder Preferences window offers options for customizing the desktop and Finder windows.

2.
To set the desktop picture, click the Select Picture button. The Choose A Picture dialog appears (Figure 3). Locate and select the desktop picture you want to use, and click Choose. Your change takes effect immediately.

Figure 3. Use the Choose A Picture dialog to select a desktop picture.

3.
To change the size of icons that appear on the desktop, drag the Icon Size slider. Dragging to the left makes the icons smaller; dragging to the right makes them larger.

4.
Choose an Icon Arrangement option:

  • None enables you to place icons anywhere you like on the desktop.

  • Always snap to grid forces icons on the desktop to move into locations on an invisible grid. This keeps things neater but restricts where icons can appear.

5.
To show all mounted disks on the desktop, turn on the Show disks on the Desktop check box.

6.
To retain the view settings of a window for each folder you open in the same window, turn on the check box labeled Keep the same view when you open a folder in the same window.

7.
Click the Finder Preferences window's close button to dismiss it and save your settings.

Tip

A desktop picture is a graphic file that appears beneath all windows and icons.

Tip

As shown in Figure 3, the Choose A Picture dialog should automatically display the contents of the Desktop Pictures folder that is installed with Mac OS X. When you select a picture file, a preview of the picture appears in the dialog (Figure 4).

Figure 4. When you select the name of a desktop picture file, a preview of it appears in the right side of the Choose a Picture window.

Tip

Changing the icon size in the Finder Preferences window does not change the size of icons in Finder windows. To change the size of icons in Finder windows, use the view options palette, which is discussed in Chapter 3.

Tip

Disks and mounting disks are discussed in Chapter 3.
