When Windows Won't Work: Troubleshooting Common Problems 352 First, a Visit with the Device Manager Windows XP stores everything it knows about your computer's hardware in a special file called the Registry. The bad news is that this Registry warehouse is in a hopelessly convoluted and confusing section of town. The good news is that Windows XP offers a way to view the hardware info from a friendlier perch. That perch is called Device Manager, and you get there by following these steps: 1. 2. 3. Select Start, Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, System. The System Properties dialog box jumps up. Display the Hardware tab. Click Device Manager. As you can see in Figure 29.6, Device Manager displays a tree-like list that consists of various hardware categories. Opening a branch displays a list of the installed devices within that category.
