Print Service Overview

Network environments create many printing challenges for network administrators. In shared printing environments where no one is responsible for managing printers, each user becomes the administrator for each printer he or she uses. Even in cases where a central person is responsible for maintaining printers, there is no guarantee that person will be aware of printer issues as they arise, since different printing protocols provide varying levels of error reporting. Also, printer protocols that support one client may not support other clients on the network. If printers are available to everyone on the network, it may be difficult to prioritize print jobs so that the most important ones print first. Finally, network administrators often want to limit, or at least monitor, the number of pages users are printing so that supplies aren't wasted.

Mac OS X Server provides a server-based print service that enables you to administer printing using Server Admin. Print service offers several features that you and your users don't get with simple network-printer sharing:
