Additional Mac OS X–specific commands include:

  • softwareupdate: Use to view the list of available updates and install updates that you specify.

  • installer: Use to install certain packages and/or metapackages.

  • pbcopy and pbpaste: Use to create data in one environment and use it in the other.

  • atlookup: Use to view AppleTalk devices on your local network.

  • plutil: Permits the conversion of binary files to XML style for editing.

  • GetFileInfo and SetFile (both located in the Developer/Tools folder): Use to manipulate HFS files with resource forks, and to get and set file attributes (such as type and creator) associated with HFS files.
