Chapter 4. Edit > Edit Links

Edit Links

This option displays a dialog that contains a list of all external links within the workbook. These are links to other files such as Excel workbooks, graphic files, Word documents, etc. These links are typically created using the Insert Object option and selecting the "Link to file" option.

The external links within the workbook display on the Links dialog, as shown in Figure 4-15. You can update the worksheet to contain the current contents of the linked file by selecting the Update Now button. This is recommended if you know the file has been modified since you opened your Excel workbook, or if the Manual update option is selected for this link.

Edit Links only shows external files that have been linked to the document. It does not show links to other sheets or locations within the workbook or hyperlinks to web sites or other file locations.

When you save your workbook containing an external link, the most current version of the linked file is saved in your workbook. When you open that workbook again, Excel prompts you to update the links. Be careful not to link to documents that may be moved or deleted in the near future. Excel remembers the full path of the linked file; if the file is moved, the link will be broken.
