15.1. A Primer on Encryption

The goals of encryption can be summarized in four broad strokes:

  • Authentication—proving one's identity

  • Privacy/Confidentiality—ensuring that only the intended recipient can read the contents of a message

  • Integrity—assuring the recipient that a received message has not been altered from the original

  • Nonrepudiation—proving the sender sent the message
