How Word Works Figure 2-5. Adjusting the timing of AutoRecover saves opens any existing AutoRecover files. These files should have all of the work done up to the time of the last AutoRecover save. Unlike .tmp files, AutoRecover files are named according to an internal mechanism and it is often difficult to tell which file goes with what document. However, since Word deletes AutoRecover files whenever a document is saved, the chances are there won't be too many AutoRecover files to sift through.
