Note that the tab indicators are dimmed, so no adjustments can be made. Characters Characters are the smallest pieces of a document. This is a significant fact to bear in mind when selecting and formatting text. A single character in a word, a single word (a collection of characters) in a paragraph, or even a blank space can be formatted simply by selecting the text and applying a different format to it. To Word, every key pressed inserts a character. Some characters appear as printable text, others as non-printing characters.
