Formulas in Excel

Much of Excel’s power comes from its ability to perform calculations on data in the worksheet. The first character of a formula is always an equal sign. This tells Excel that the cell entry is a formula and not text or a number. Then the formula is written as described here, using the standard elements:

  • Numbers entered directly into the formula

  • The operator symbols +, –, *, /, and ^ for addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and exponentiation

  • Cell references that tell the formulas to use data from other worksheet cells

  • Parentheses, if needed, to ensure the formula works as you intend

  • Excel functions (covered in the next section)
