Chapter 23. Building Documents with Templates > Using WordPerfect's Templates

Using WordPerfect's Templates

Whether you realize it or not, you use a template every time you create a new document. The wp11us.wpt/wp12us.wpt template (for the U.S. version of WordPerfect) is the default template, and it contains all the default settings for new documents. Although the default template is blank except for the initial settings, a typical template is like a fill-in-the-blanks document. It contains the formatting, layout, and standard blocks of text—all you have to do is provide the content. Voilà! A document is created, ready to print, fax, or e-mail. It takes about 30 seconds to create a fax cover sheet, not three to four minutes to edit another cover sheet, and certainly not 10 minutes to type it from scratch. Multiply that by the number of times you use a fax cover sheet, or invoice, or legal time sheet, and you've saved enough time to actually go out for lunch.

WordPerfect 11 (and 12) ship with over twenty templates and more are available for a free download. You might not have to create your own for quite a while, if ever. When you do venture out and create your own template, you'll be able to use any of the existing templates as a model, so all you have to do is make minor adjustments. In just a few minutes, you can even turn your own documents into templates.
