Introduction

Tablet PCs are gradually making their way into the mainstream of healthcare. They offer everything a notebook computer does, but they also offer more mobility and more natural input using handwriting recognition, digital ink, and speech recognition. With a Tablet PC and the right software, a clinician can pull up medical records from a central server, annotate an X-ray image, dictate notes, prescribe medications that are transmitted wirelessly to the pharmacist, and use the device to show the patient an educational video of a procedure.

Tablet PCs are the natural complement to Office 2003 for healthcare professionals. Using the Tablet PC with Office 2003, you can insert hand drawings in Word, annotate an Excel spreadsheet, write down audience comments in PowerPoint during a presentation, and speak to your computer instead of typing.
