Chapter 5. Creating a Task List > Using Custom Outline Numbers

Using Custom Outline Numbers

The custom WBS codes discussed in the preceding section are always tied to the outline structure. Each segment of the WBS code mask is linked to a specific outline level. Sorting the task list according to the WBS code produces the same order as sorting according to ID numbers. If you want complete control over a coding system for tasks that is independent of the outline structure you have created, you can use any of 10 custom outline fields (Outline Code 1 through Outline Code 10) to create alternative labeling systems that you can use to sort and group tasks in different orders. Creating and using custom outline codes is described in detail in Chapter 21, “Customizing Views, Tables, Fields, Filters, and Groups.”
