Customizing a Template

If you find that you are consistently modifying the same template (for example, modifying the Contemporary Letter template to function as letterhead for your company), you can save time by making your modifications once and overwriting the existing template with those changes. The next time you open the template, your changes will already be present instead of the placeholder text.

Customize an Existing Template

Click the File menu‚ and then click New.

Click On My Computer.

Click a document type tab, and then click an existing template.

Select the Template option.

Click OK.

Customize the placeholder text that you want to modify by typing those entries that will be consistent from one document to the next.

Click the File menu‚ and then click Save As.

Click the Save As Type list arrow, and then click Document Template.

Browse to the folder containing the template you have customized, and then double-click the existing template file. A Warning dialog box opens asking if you want to overwrite the existing template with the customized template.

Click Save.
