Chapter 2. Sending and Receiving E-Mail > Receiving and Reading Messages

Receiving and Reading Messages

Messages that have been sent to you are stored on your e-mail server until Outlook retrieves them. By default, Outlook retrieves your mail at regular intervals. You can also retrieve your messages between scheduled retrieval times by clicking the Send/Receive button. When a message is retrieved, its message header appears in the Outlook Inbox. Click the message header to display the contents of the message in the Reading pane, which increases the area for reading your e-mail. If you receive e-mail messages in plain-text format with extra blank lines that make reading the message difficult, Outlook uses Text AutoCleanup to remove the extra lines when you view the message in the Reading pane, open the message, or print the message. To restore the extra blank lines, click the yellow banner in the Reading pane or message window.

Receive and Read Messages

Click the Send/Receive button on the Standard toolbar. The content of the first message in the Inbox appears in the Reading pane.

To display another message in the Inbox, click the message header to display the contents of the message in the Reading pane.

Read the contents of the message in the Reading pane.
