Exiting Excel

After you finish working on a workbook, you can close it. Closing a workbook makes more computer memory available for other processes. Closing a workbook is different from quitting Excel: after you close a workbook, Excel is still running. When you're finished using Excel, you can quit the program. To protect your files, always quit Excel before turning off your computer.

Close a Workbook

Click the File menu, and then click Close, or click the Close button on the worksheet window title bar.

If you have made any changes to the workbook since last saving it, the Office Assistant asks if you want them saved.

Click Yes to save any workbook changes; click No to close the workbook without saving any changes; or click Cancel to return to the workbook without closing it.
