Using AutoFormat

AutoFormat does exactly what the name says: It automatically applies formatting to paragraphs. AutoFormat can be used to create headings, bulleted and numbered lists, symbols, fractions, hyperlinks, em dashes, bold, and italics. You can use AutoFormat to format a document as you type, and/or you can run it through after you finish.

Word analyzes each paragraph and based on how it is used in the document, Word applies a style to that paragraph. For example, if Word detects a number, followed by a period, followed by a tab, it assumes a numbered list and so applies a numbered list style. Some people like this feature, others don’t. The important point is that you can customize AutoFormat to suit your preferences.
