Chapter 7. Working with Pages > Creating Watermarks

Creating Watermarks

A watermark is a design that is printed on fine paper and can only be seen by holding the paper up to a light. Watermarks were traditionally used to identify the type and maker of a certain type of paper. Your business may be using paper with a watermark design for letterhead and second sheets.

Today watermarks are printed behind the document text and are usually done in a light gray so they don’t detract from the rest of the document. They are used to identify the type of document and, in some cases, impose restrictions on a document. For example, you could create a watermark that states the document cannot be copied or that the document is confidential. A printed watermark will certainly transfer over if the document is copied, even if the watermark is very light.
