Using Word’s Automatic Proofreading Features

You may notice that as you type a document, red underlines appear under some words. The underlines indicate that the Check Spelling as You Type feature is working for you. These words are marked as possible misspellings.

Check Spelling as You Type is one of the two automatic proofreading features in Word; the other is Check Grammar as You Type, which checks for grammatical errors. The theory behind these two features is that it’s faster to correct errors while you are typing than to go back and fix them later. If Check Grammar as You Type is activated, you may see green underlines in the text as well.
