Inserting Symbols

You can insert symbols (such as the asterisk, dollar sign, pound sign, percent sign) with your keyboard by holding down the Shift key and pressing the key. Word also gives you access to a tremendous collection of symbols, special characters, and language characters that you can insert in your documents. The variety and types of symbols available depend on the font that you want to use. The same goes for the language characters; they are available only in the “expanded” fonts, such as Times New Roman or Arial.

Using the Symbol Dialog Box

The Symbol dialog box provides a complete list of the available symbols for the fonts that you have installed on your system. After you choose a font, you can select a symbol from the list. The special characters are accessible through the Special Characters tab of the Symbol dialog box.
