Chapter 18. Secure E-mail > Is Your E-mail Secure?

Is Your E-mail Secure?

E-mails sent over the Internet aren't really secure. People can use various tools to read your e-mails as they are passed along from server to server on the Internet. This risk isn't very big usually, but it is a risk. Being aware of this risk can be important particularly for business e-mails that contain confidential information, or for other e-mails in which security is important. Using digital encryption of e-mails so only the intended recipient can read them is a good way to solve this problem.

Another security problem that can be solved by using secure e-mail is verification of the person who sent you the e-mail. It's possible for someone, or for a computer virus, to pretend to be someone else. A digital signature is used to verify the sender of an e-mail.
