Outlook as an E-mail Client

Outlook 2003 is a Personal Information Manager, but it also is a leading e-mail client for Windows platforms. Outlook supports the primary protocols for sending and receiving e-mail:

  • POP3, the Internet standard Post Office Protocol version 3 used for downloading e-mail

  • IMAP, the Internet standard Internet Message Access Protocol, which is a newer standard than POP3 that is also used for downloading e-mail

  • SMTP, the Internet standard Simple Mail Transfer Protocol used for sending e-mail over the Internet

  • HTTP mail, used for services such as Hotmail and Yahoo mail

  • Exchange server, used for sending and receiving e-mail within organizations using Microsoft Exchange server

  • Additional e-mail protocols and servers such as Lotus Notes and cc:Mail using connectors designed to talk to those servers
