Chapter 4. Advanced E-mail Techniques > Filtering Junk E-mail

Filtering Junk E-mail

Outlook 2003 has powerful new junk e-mail filtering based on research done at Microsoft for MSN 8. Junk e-mail, also known as spam, has become a huge problem for everyone who receives e-mail. In fact, recent studies indicate that as much as 60% of all e-mail is junk e-mail. These e-mails waste time and e-mail bandwidth, and often contain content that is not suitable for family viewing, so the new e-mail junk filtering in Outlook 2003 is a welcome feature.

You learned about enabling the junk e-mail features in Chapter 3. If you receive a message that is classified as junk e-mail, it is moved from the Inbox to the Junk E-mail folder. You can then examine the items in the Junk E-mail folder occasionally and make sure they are really junk before deleting them.
