Chapter 4. Advanced E-mail Techniques > Working with Attachments

Working with Attachments

In Chapter 3, you learned about attaching files to Outlook e-mails. You also learned that some files are restricted as attachments because the attached files can be executed. In this section, you will learn more about sending and receiving restricted file attachments.

Outlook restricts access to certain attachments based on their file extensions. These attachments are restricted because they are file types that can be executed, which means they are like programs that can be run. A few years ago, many Outlook users were besieged with e-mails containing attached viruses, which often masqueraded as legitimate file attachments. Despite warnings that such attachments could contain viruses, the users often opened such attachments without a second thought, leading to their computers becoming infected with viruses.
