Chapter 16. Word Settings to Change > Understanding Macro Security

Understanding Macro Security

This last change in this chapter is certainly not the least important, so pay attention!

Word documents can contain macros that automate many different tasks. These macros are stored with the document. Depending on how Word is configured, macros can execute automatically when you open a document. This can be a good thing, but it can also be a really bad thing if the macro is a malicious one that, say, deletes a bunch of files from your hard disk. You might open an innocent-seeming document that someone has sent you as an email attachment, only to have it really cripple your computer.
