Chapter 16. Word Settings to Change > Changing Default File Locations

Changing Default File Locations

Word uses your My Documents folder as the default location for documents. So when you click File, Open, the Open dialog box shows the contents of My Documents. Word also sets other default file locations, such as the locations of templates, clip art, and AutoRecover files.

You can change these default locations to help better organize your documents and other files or to adjust Word to the way you store your documents. For example, maybe you use a particular folder in My Documents for all your Word documents. Why not open that folder by default instead of opening My Documents? Or you might have a collection of templates on a server that you want Word to use. You can point Word to the server for those templates.
