Other Ways to Work with Cells

The previous sections explain how to format cells to control the way the data in those cells appears. There are some other ways to work with cells, however, and the following sections discuss the most interesting of them.

Merging and Splitting Cells

Sometimes you want to merge cells into one big cell. For example, to make multiline text fit in a single cell, you need to resize the cell. This resizing affects the cells on either side of the resized cell. So rather than make the cells on either side too big, you can just merge some cells together to suit the text. Figure 19.12 shows some cells that have been merged.
