Formatting Numbers and Text

Excel makes it easy to apply formatting to data in a worksheet. For example, you can format cells so they display as currency, such as with a $ sign. You can format numbers to display with a certain number of decimal places. You can apply different fonts and other font characteristics to text. Many other formatting choices are available, as well. The following sections examine some of the most common ones.

Formatting Numbers

The main reason to format numbers in a worksheet is to control the way the numbers appear. For example, you might want some numbers to appear as currency and others to appear as percentages. Figure 19.1 includes cells formatted to display numbers using both of these formats.
