Tabs

Tabs are particularly handy when you need to align columns in a document or section of a document. You can also use tabs to create a simple table of contents for a document.

Word defaults to a tab spacing of .5 inches, but you can set tabs at any spacing to suit your needs. The tabs affect the current paragraph or selection of paragraphs and any that you add after setting the tabs. Changing tab stops doesn’t affect paragraphs that are not selected, so you can easily localize tab changes.
