Part 12. Word and the Web > Inserting Hyperlinks in a Word Document

Inserting Hyperlinks in a Word Document

Select the word or phrase in your document that you want to become the hyperlink text.

Click the Insert Hyperlink button on the Standard toolbar.

The Insert Hyperlink dialog box opens. Click the Existing File or Web Page button under Link to.

Click the Browse the Web button. (Alternatively, type the full address of the target Web page in the Address text box and skip to step 6.)

INTRODUCTION

A hyperlink is a “clickable” piece of text or an image that leads to another location (the target of the hyperlink). With Word's Hyperlink feature, you can create links to other parts of the same document, to other documents, or to Web pages. In this task, you learn how to create a hyperlink to a Web page. Keep in mind that hyperlinks are only useful if your readers will view your Word document onscreen.

TIP

Modifying a Hyperlink

To modify a hyperlink, right-click it, and choose Hyperlink, Edit Hyperlink to open the Edit Hyperlink dialog box. Click the ScreenTip button to change the ScreenTip text. To remove, right-click it and choose Hyperlink, Remove Hyperlink.

Your browser window opens. Navigate to the target Web page, then click the Word document's taskbar button to switch back to Word.

The address of the Web page now appears in the Address text box. Click OK.

The hyperlink text is now colored and underlined. When you point to it, the address of the target Web page appears in a ScreenTip. Ctrl+click the hyperlink.

In a moment, the target Web page appears in your browser window. (You may be prompted to connect to the Internet if you have already disconnected.)
