Copying Font and Paragraph Formatting

To copy just the font formatting, click anywhere in the text that has the formatting you want to copy.

Click the Format Painter button on the Formatting toolbar.

The mouse pointer becomes an I-beam with a paintbrush attached to it. Drag over the text where you want to apply the formatting.

Release the mouse button. Word applies the formatting to the selected text.

INTRODUCTION

If you have applied several font or paragraph formats to a block of text and then decide that you'd like to use the same combination of formats elsewhere in the document, you don't have to apply the formatting from scratch. Instead, you can use Word's Format Painter feature to copy the formatting of the original block of text and then “paint” it across the other text. Follow steps 1 through 4 if you only want to copy font formatting, or steps 5 through 8 to copy paragraph and font formatting.

To copy paragraph and font formatting, select the entire paragraph that contains the formatting, including the paragraph mark.

Click the Format Painter button on the Formatting toolbar.

The mouse pointer becomes an I-beam with a paintbrush attached to it. Drag over the paragraph to which you want to apply the formatting.

Release the mouse button. Word applies the formatting to the selected text.
