Part 3. Editing Text > Seeing Paragraph, Tab, and Space Marks

Seeing Paragraph, Tab, and Space Marks

Click the Show/Hide button on the Standard toolbar.

Word uses a dot to show where you pressed the Spacebar.

Word uses an arrow to indicate where you pressed the Tab key.

Word uses the paragraph mark symbol (¶) to indicate where you pressed Enter to end a paragraph.

INTRODUCTION

The Show/Hide button is an extremely handy tool. It displays nonprinting symbols onscreen to show you where you pressed the Spacebar, the Enter key, and the Tab key. You might use this button to check whether you typed an extra space between two words, to see how many blank lines there are between two paragraphs, or to confirm that you inserted only one tab at the beginning of a paragraph.

TIP

Understanding the Show/Hide Button

The Show/Hide button is a toggle button. You click it once to turn it on, and again to turn it off. You can turn the Show/Hide button on and off whenever you choose.
