Part 10. Adding Images to Your Document > Cropping an Image and Adding Borders

Cropping an Image and Adding Borders

To crop an image, select it and click the Crop button on the Picture toolbar. A special cropping pointer appears.

Drag a selection handle and release the mouse button when the desired portion is cropped out.

In this example, the upper part of the image is cropped out. Click the Crop button again to turn it off.

To add a border to an image, make sure the image is no longer in-line, select it, click the Line Style button on the Picture toolbar, and choose a line style from the list that appears.

INTRODUCTION

Word enables you to alter images in a wide variety of ways. In this task, you learn two techniques that will get you started: cropping and adding or removing borders. You crop an image to remove a portion of it. Adding borders around an image gives it definition, while removing borders makes it blend into the surrounding text. You can crop an image regardless of whether it is in-line, but you cannot add a border to an in-line image. (To take your image “out of line,” click it and choose a text wrapping option; see steps 1–3 in the preceding task for help.)

TIP

Displaying the Picture Toolbar

If you don't see the Picture toolbar, Open the View menu, choose Toolbars, and select Picture.

Word adds a border to the image. (You may want to deselect the image so that you can see the border more clearly.) To adjust the border's appearance, first double-click the image.

The Format Picture dialog box opens. Click the Colors and Lines tab, choose the desired settings in the Line area, and click OK.

Word modifies the border. (Again, you may want to deselect the image to see the border more clearly.)
