Troubleshooting

Word Keeps Changing my Entire Document

Every time I select a paragraph and make even the tiniest change to it, Word changes my entire document. If I want to boldface a paragraph, my entire document turns bold. If I add a bullet character, every paragraph in the document gets a bullet. I figured out that I can press Ctrl+Z to undo the global change, but this is getting ridiculous. What's going on?

Word is only following orders. Somewhere along the line, you told Word that you wanted it to automatically update the Normal paragraph style every time you made a change to it. When you select a paragraph formatted using the Normal style, Word dutifully applies the change to every other paragraph using that style. Although this option is incredibly useful for custom styles you create, we can't think of a single good reason to have this option turned on for the Normal style. To turn it off, open the Styles and Formatting task pane, click the arrow to the right of the Normal style entry, and choose Modify. Clear the Automatically Update check box and click OK.
