Chapter 39. Publisher Essentials > What Can You Do with Publisher?

What Can You Do with Publisher?

Microsoft Publisher is a desktop publishing program that also does Web pages and HTML-formatted e-mail. Its design tools let you precisely place images and text on a page to create an attractive publication. Although you can create similar-looking documents using Microsoft Word, in general, you'll find more sophisticated page-layout tools in a DTP program, and you'll also find it easier to send the finished product to a commercial printer. Unlike Word, which is geared toward producing standard business documents on letter-sized paper, Publisher offers a diverse assortment of predesigned publications in all shapes and sizes, from business cards to newsletters, with CD and DVD labels, greeting cards, and flyers thrown in for good measure.

Publisher's professional printing tools allow you to manage color in publications destined to be printed commercially. Using these designs can save you the time it would take to create them yourself. Publisher also provides DTP tools such as baseline guides for lining up text on the page—a subtle feature that defines professional publications.
