Chapter 16. Outlook Security and Privacy > Blocking E-mail Viruses

Blocking E-mail Viruses

Viruses, typically spread through e-mail messages, have garnered plenty of publicity in recent years, and for good reason. Although some viruses are benign, others can destroy or corrupt data files and install Trojan horse programs that permit outside access to your computer. Cleaning up after a virus is time-consuming and often requires technical skills that are beyond those possessed by average users. In the fight against viruses, your best strategy is to prevent them from reaching your computer in the first place.

Your first line of defense, of course, is effective, up-to-date antivirus software. As viruses in recent years have proved time and again, even the most disciplined and vigilant user can fall prey to new types of attacks. Office 2003 includes an integrated antivirus interface that allows third-party software to hook directly into the File Open dialog box in Office and scan e-mail messages as they arrive.
