Chapter 14. Managing a Contacts List > Using Windows/MSN Messenger to Communica...

Using Windows/MSN Messenger to Communicate with Contacts

Outlook 2003 integrates with Microsoft's instant messaging utilities, MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger, enabling you to communicate with contacts immediately, in a Messenger window, rather than through e-mail.

Outlook looks for a value in the IM Address field for any Contact item. When you open an e-mail message from a contact whose address is listed in your Contacts folder, Outlook checks to see whether that person is listed in the Contacts folder as having a Messenger ID. If so, you'll see a small name icon to the left of her name in the From line at the top of the message. The message appears green if the contact is online, gray if she's currently offline. Click to display a menu like the one shown in Figure 14.7.
