Using Goal Seek

The Goal Seek feature in Excel uses a single variable to find a desired result. To understand Goal Seek, consider this simple scenario. Suppose you’re a sales representative for a packaging business. You must achieve $100,000 in sales this year to receive a bonus. Figure 25.1 shows a table that displays the current situation—you have sold 2,000 units of a product with a per-unit sales price of $3.46. How many units must you sell to achieve your $100,000 goal?

Figure 25.1. Use Goal Seek to find the unknown variable—such as how many boxes must be sold at a unit price of $3.46 to reach $100,000 in sales.
