Chapter 4. Applying Number and Date Formats > Pasting In Custom Characters

Pasting In Custom Characters

If you created a custom character or use a symbol or format often that takes special steps to create, you can paste the symbol in the custom formats. For example, the custom currency discussed and shown previously in Figure 4.7 shows the Yen symbol. The Yen symbol was created by turning on Num Lock, pressing the Alt key, and typing the ANSI code. Well, there’s an easier way. Insert the ANSI code for the desired currency and then follow these steps to establish this character as a custom format:

1.
Select the cell containing the character you want imported as a custom format.

2.
Select the character in the formula bar, right-click the selected character, and choose Copy on the shortcut menu (or click the Copy button, or press Ctrl+C).

3.
Then, press the Esc key or click the Cancel key (red X on the formula bar) to deselect the current selection.

4.
Access the Number tab in the Format Cells dialog box and select Custom from the Category list.

5.
In the Type text box, press Ctrl+V to paste the character into the custom format as shown in Figure 4.8.
