Applying Common Numeric Formats from the Toolbar

Numeric formatting changes the appearance of your numbers, displaying them as currency, percentages, dates, phone numbers, and so on. Although this formatting might seem purely cosmetic, it also serves an important purpose in defining the nature of your numbers (do the sales figures represent dollar volume or number of units sold?). It also helps ensure that your numbers appear in a digestible format (reducing the number of decimals displayed in a percentage, for example) so that they don’t crowd or complicate your worksheet unnecessarily.

The most commonly applied number formats are applied directly from the Formatting toolbar, and each is described in Table 4.1.
