Chapter 12. Customizing Excel > Installing Optional Components

Installing Optional Components

When you install Excel, using either the Excel installation CD or the Microsoft Office installation CD, the setup routine installs Excel’s most common features and adds tools and features only when you choose to use them. Much of the available clip art and most international features, for example, are omitted from the installation. To manually install additional features and tools, perform the following steps:

1.
Load the Excel or Office installation CD into your CD-ROM drive. (If you have more than one CD, you must run the installation routine for each CD.)

2.
If the installation routine does not start automatically, double-click the My Computer icon (on the Windows desktop or on the Start menu), double-click the icon for your CD-ROM drive, and then double-click the Setup icon, as shown in Figure 12.15. The Microsoft Excel 2003 or Microsoft Office 2003 Setup dialog box appears.

3.
Click the Add or Remove Features option and click Next. The next dialog box that appears enables you to customize the installation.

4.
Click the check box next to Choose Advanced Customization of Applications, and then click Next. The Microsoft Excel 2003 or Microsoft Office 2003 Setup dialog box shows a list of programs and features included on the CD. Figure 12.16 shows the Microsoft Office 2003 Setup dialog box.

5.
Click the plus sign next to a program or feature set to expand it.

6.
Click the icon next to a feature, and select one of the following options:

Run from My Computer installs the feature on your computer’s hard drive.

Run All from My Computer installs the complete feature set on your computer’s hard drive.

Installed on First Use prompts you to install the feature or tool on your computer’s hard drive the first time you select the command to use the feature or tool.

Not Available removes the program or feature from your computer’s hard drive and removes all commands that refer to the program or feature.

7.
When you’re finished entering your preferences, click Update. The installation routine installs the selected components as specified.
