Receiving Advances and Down Payments

Sometimes you might receive money in the form of an advance from a customer for whom you have agreed to perform some work, as a retainer from a client who plans to use your services in the future, or as a down payment on a future purchase.

If you created an invoice for a prepayment from a customer or client, treat the receipt of cash just as you treat any money received against an invoice (see the section “Receiving Payments for Your Invoices,” earlier in this chapter).
