CPA Tip: Override the Way QuickBooks Applies Payments

Unless there is a specific match for an amount you receive and an outstanding invoice amount, QuickBooks automatically applies customer payments to the oldest outstanding invoice. If you find that you frequently need to change how the payments are applied, you can tell QuickBooks not to apply the payment automatically. This way you will be forced to look at the invoices and associate the payment with the correct charge.

To turn off this automatic payment application feature, choose Edit, Preferences, and then click on the Sales & Customers icon. Choose the Company Preferences tab, and uncheck the Automatically apply payments box. Click OK to save your change.
