Chapter 22. Income Taxes > Hiring a Pro

Hiring a Pro

If you are considering hiring a professional to help with your tax return preparation or to advise you on tax issues, be aware of both the benefits and the consequences. This can be a money-saving expenditure, if the professional helps you cut your taxes. It can cost you more in the long run, however, if the professional steers you the wrong way. Following are some points to keep in mind when looking for professional help:

  • How long has the professional worked in the tax field?

  • What is the education and experience of the professional?

  • Will the professional provide you with referrals?

  • How much experience has the professional had at representing clients before the IRS?

  • Has the professional ever been fined or penalized with respect to tax work he or she has performed?

  • Does this professional plan to be in the same line of business five years from now?

  • What is the fee and how is it determined?

  • What is the cost to you for representation if your tax return is audited?
