CPA Tip: Tax Return Audits

The Internal Revenue Service regularly chooses income tax returns to examine, or audit. The reasons for how a tax return gets chosen are varied. There may be a history of tax problems with you or your company, there may be a desire on the part of the government to learn more about businesses of your type, there may be something unusual in your tax return that calls attention to your company, or you may have been chosen completely at random.

You can minimize the chance of being audited by being aware of what the IRS looks for when it makes the choice of which tax returns to examine. Here’s a quick list of red flags:
